and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.

– 1 Peter 5:4

There will be a day when our Lord returns to gather His people to Himself. Are you preparing to see the Lord? One of the ways you can do so is—as we saw in chapter 4 yesterday—to minister to others with the gifts God has given you.

As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

– 1 Peter 4:10

Every child of God is gifted by Him for service within His kingdom. The best thing you can do with the gift(s) that God has given to you is to use them in ministry to others within the body of Christ.

Do you know how you are gifted by God? Are you using your gifts to minister to others?

But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.

– 1 Peter 2:9-10

I’m fairly certain that if I looked back at my comments on this chapter from the last several years, I probably default to these two verses when we come to it. They are important verses that present vital truth to us.

God’s will, and your calling as His own special people, is to declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness and into His marvelous light, making you His people, bestowing upon you His great mercy.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

– 1 Peter 1:3-5

I’m not sure I have anything more to add, in the way of devotional comment, to these words, other than to encourage you to read them several times and meditate upon them today.

Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit.

– James 5:17-18

Sometimes we read the stories of the Old Testament, and walk away with an exalted view of the individuals spoken of in them. But Elijah, one of the great prophets of old, was a person with a nature just like ours. What made him special? It wasn’t him, it was the God in whom he trusted, and petitioned persistently in prayer.

If anything, the lives and victories of individuals like Elijah should compel us to be more diligent in prayer. God still works mightily, in and through His people, and as E.M. Bounds once wrote, “Where prayer is focused, power falls.”

Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.

– James 4:10

Modern Western social media culture tempts us to promote and promote and publicize ourselves at every turn. Constantly we are encouraged to ‘build a platform’ and be known. God’s methods are so much better. The way of humility is contrary to our culture and the inclinations of our flesh. But it invites the presence and blessing of God, who resists the proud.

Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles!

– James 3:5

I’ve lived most of my life in Southern California, which means that this time of year we have dozens of wildfires burning throughout the state, and “red-flag” weather warnings virtually every day. Sometimes the smallest spark—from a passing car’s catalytic converter, or waving tree branch contacting power lines—ends up igniting a massive campaign fire that threatens lives and property. In the same way, our tiny tongues have the ability to bring massive destruction. Therefore we would do well to bridle our tongues. Be slow to speak! I guarantee you’ll be happy that you are.

Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

– James 2:17

It has been said that “the faith that works is the faith that works.” That might be a saying you need to thank about to fully understand, but I think it’s theologically correct. Our faith is most clearly seen in our actions, so that it is true to say “don’t tell me what you believe, let me watch your life and see it.”

What do your actions say about what you believe?
