For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.

Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.

– 1 Thessalonians 5:9-11

Again, when considering prophetic and eschatological passages of Scripture, may it be that we rejoice in, and find comfort from the clear reality that in Christ we are free from wrath.

Therefore comfort one another with these words.

– 1 Thessalonians 4:18

In this passage Paul presents teaching that gives us eschatological insight. Such topics are fascinating, and often solicit much interest. But his final word in chapter four has always stood out to me. Whatever we think we know, or come to believe about the future things God plans to one day accomplish, they ought (ultimately) to be a comfort to us.

For what thanks can we render to God for you, for all the joy with which we rejoice for your sake before our God, night and day praying exceedingly that we may see your face and perfect what is lacking in your faith?

1 Thessalonians 3:9-10

One of the things that becomes clear, when reading Paul’s epistles, is that Paul frequently prayed for the churches he ministered to and loved. In this is an important example that we ought to emulate. Paul prayed exceedingly, night and day, for the believers he knew. May God stir in us a similar commitment and passion.

For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Is it not even you in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at His coming? For you are our glory and joy.

– 1 Thessalonians 2:19-20

John, in his final writings (2 & 3 John) would speak of his joy and rejoicing in the fact that those of the churches he oversaw, walked in the truth (2 John 1:4, and 3 John 1:4). Paul extends that joy and rejoicing on into our time in heaven. Aside from the fact that we will begin God’s presence (where there is fullness of joy) we will rejoice in the fact that others—perhaps even those whom we prayed for, and shared the gospel with—are there in God’s presence, at His appearing.

We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers, remembering without ceasing your work of faith, labor of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the sight of our God and Father,

– 1 Thessalonians 1:2-3

Faith, hope, and love are essential evidences of the transforming work of God, in His church. Through faith in Christ, we have hope in God, and love by His Holy Spirit issuing forth from our lives. May we grow ever more in these three, recognizing (as Paul taught in 1 Corinthians 13) that “the greatest of these is love.”
