And now I plead with you, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment to you, but that which we have had from the beginning: that we love one another.

– 2 John 1:5

Just as with our text yesterday in 1 John 5, we have a tendency of adding layers to the simplicity we find in Christ. Once again we are reminded here of the simple importance of the commandment we’ve had from the beginning: “that we love one another.” It really is that simple.

That it is simple, doesn’t mean that it is easy. “God give us the ability and the grace to love one another as you have loved us!”

And now I plead with you, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment to you, but that which we have had from the beginning: that we love one another. This is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, that as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it.

– 2 John 1:5-6

Love is the commandment, and to walk according to the commandments is to love as He loved us. A life lived in obedience to the commandment of love is a life well spent.

This is the commandment, that as you have heard from the beginning, you should walk in it.

– 1 John 1:5-6

Most commentators and Bible teachers agree, the “elect lady” of 1 John is likely the church. Here John reminds the church again of Christ’s all important commandment to “love one another.” And in this commandment we love God by walking according to His commandments.

So, the logic is simple … do you want to fulfill the commandment to love the Lord your God with all of your heart, mind and strength? Then fulfill the commandment to love one another, and you’ll be well on your way.

The logic is simple … the practice takes some effort.

For many deceivers have gone out into the world who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

– 2 John 7

It didn’t take long for the devil to move to corrupt the pure message of the Gospel. The deceiver has been at it for a long time and he will not let up anytime soon. We must therefore be on guard agains the wiles of the devil.

Daily Thoughts

And now I plead with you, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment to you, but that which we have had from the beginning: that we love one another.

– 2 John 1:5

Many Bible teachers, including myself, believe that John’s reference to “the elect lady” in 2 John is a coded reference referring to the Church. Therefore, John here pleads with the church both 2,000 years ago, and now, to keep the ancient command of God to love one another.

Love is the summary of all of God’s law. As Paul wrote to the Galatians…

“For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

– Galatians 5:14

And as Jesus spoke in Matthew 22:37-40…

Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ “This is the first and great commandment. “And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ “On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

It would be difficult to keep all of God’s written law exactingly. But thankfully everything can be concisely summed up in one word. Love.

Today’s goal

Love God and one another.
