Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.

– 3 John 1:2

I will likely never meet the vast majority of those who read this daily post. At least not here, at this time. But as John did 2,000 years ago, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health. Especially as we near the end of 2018, and prepare for 2019. May you prosper in all things; body, soul, and spirit!

Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who does good is of God, but he who does evil has not seen God.

– 3 John 1:11

Paul exhorted that we be imitators of God as dear children. In like manner John here exhorts that we be imitators of what is good. For in so doing we prove that we are “of God.”

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.

– 3 John 4

As a pastor of a church, but even more so as a father of four, these words have seated themselves solidly in my heart and mind. I pray toward this end. I preach toward this end. And I parent toward this end.

Daily Thoughts

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.

– 3 John 1:4

I was 16 years old the first time I went to a church youth camp. Twenty years later I can say with confidence that it was a turning point in my life. I’ll never forget that camp. The theme was “In Christ” and the focus of the teaching was the Book of Ephesians.

The opening day of the camp a balding, nearly 70 year old heavyset Pastor taught all three sessions on Ephesians 1. When he stepped up to the pulpit for the first session there was a sense among many of the nearly 400 high school students in attendance that this ‘old guy’ wouldn’t have anything to share with a bunch of kids. We were wrong.

By the end of the day a seed had been planted in my mind and heart by the old man. A seed of a desire to serve God with the rest of my life. As he walked to his car after the final evening session I caught him for a moment and asked, “Will you please sign my Bible?” Looking back it was one of those odd, youthful requests, but I do remember what he wrote…
